Qt - High-performance user interfaces for embedded systems

At PHYTEC, we seamlessly integrate the Qt framework into our BSPs, saving you time-consuming integration work and the hassle of resolving dependencies. Benefit from pre-configured images, virtual development environments, and comprehensive tutorials. Start your application development directly and with a clear focus.

Qt Integration Made Easy

We take the complexity of system integration off your hands. Our Qt support includes:

  • Seamless BSP integration: The Qt framework is pre-integrated by default in almost all PHYTEC Yocto BSPs.

  • Ready-to-Run Demos: With our phytec-qt-demo-images you can immediately evaluate the graphics performance of our hardware.

  • Pre-configured development environment: For selected kits, we provide virtual machines (VMs) in which the Qt Creator, including a fully configured toolchain, is already set up and ready for your first build.

  • Comprehensive documentation: Step-by-step guides show you how to set up and optimally use Qt on your host system.

  • Expert support: Do you need more in-depth help? Our support team can assist you with specific integration questions and optimizations.

The PHYTEC quality promise

So that you can focus on your application, we ensure that the underlying infrastructure works. At PHYTEC, Qt is an integral part of our release cycles.

Automated Build Assurance
Each of our BSPs is automatically built against our comprehensive phytec-qt6demo image. This guarantees that all dependencies are cleanly resolved, the cross-compiler works correctly, and your Qt application is immediately compilable.

Verified Feature Set
Beyond mere compilability, our developers thoroughly test the functionality of key Qt modules directly on the hardware. We ensure that the basic features required by modern GUIs run smoothly and stably in practice.

We are keeping an eye on these components for you:

Multimedia & Performance

Hardware-accelerated video playback (VPU/GPU) via QtMultimedia and smooth rendering on available platforms.

User Interface

Support for modern Qt6 QML, Custom Elements, Theming and On-Screen Keyboards.

Input

Functional multi-touch handling.

system integration

e.g. D-Bus connection for update clients such as RAUC.

Image processing with Qt & PHYTEC

Displaying live video streams in a modern GUI is a core requirement for many industrial HMI devices. Together with our partner Sequality (a software service provider specializing in Qt applications in image processing) we have a highly optimized demo for the phyBOARD Pollux (i.MX 8M Plus)

The demo shows the extremely low-latency, synchronous live display of two phyCAM VM-020 cameras integrated into a fluid Qt user interface.

Getting Started

Get started right away. We have prepared ready-made Qt images, pre-compiled BSPs, and virtual development environments for our kits.
Tip: Our development kits come standard with a booted Qt demo image on the SD card. Simply connect a display and test the PHYTEC Qt demo immediately.

1. Using the PHYTEC Virtual Machine (The fastest way)
To make getting started as easy as possible, we have prepared a ready-to-use virtual machine (based on Ubuntu LTS) for you. The complete Yocto Cross-Compile Toolchain (SDK) is already installed in this VM and seamlessly integrated into the pre-configured Qt Creator. Network settings (such as IP addresses) for communication between the host and target hardware are also pre-configured, allowing you to deploy your Qt application directly to the PHYTEC board with just one "Build & Run" click.

2. Manual Qt setup on your host PC
If you prefer to work natively on your own system, our Development Environment Guides detailed instructions on how to compile the Yocto SDK and integrate it into the Qt Creator on your host system (e.g. Ubuntu).

  • Navigate to the product page of your module (tab) Downloads).

  • With Software & Software Manuals > Linux BSP Releases find the Development Environment Guide.

  • In the chapter 5.8 Installing and Setting up Qt Creator You will find the step-by-step instructions.

3. PHYTEC Qt demo on GitHub
Would you like to view or modify the code behind our PHYTEC Qt demo? We make the source code of our demo applications available on GitHub as a basis for your own development. The demos showcase best practices for QML UI design, sensor integration, and touch operation on PHYTEC hardware.

Links & Resources

Here you will find direct links to our pre-configured images, development guides and virtual machines (VMs).

We maintain Qt images and BSP templates for many other PHYTEC SoMs. Here's how to find the relevant resources:

  1. On the PHYTEC website, navigate to the product page for your module.
  2. Switch to the Downloads tab.
  3. Under Software & Software Manuals > Linux BSP Releases you will find all available BSP releases including the Development Environment Guides.
  4. (Alternatively) Navigate directly to our download server: PHYTEC Linux Downloads. In the download folder for your processor and specific release, you will usually find the Qt image in the folder ampliphy-vendor-xwayland under the name phytec-qt6demo-image... (as a directly flashable .wic.xz file).
