Thin Edge - Your simple blueprint for complex IoT connectivity

Connect your PHYTEC hardware securely, efficiently, and flexibly to the cloud of your choice. With the pre-integrated thin-edge.io Transform our framework phyGATE Tauri L into a powerful IoT gateway that intelligently manages sensors and controllers in the field and can translate data into various cloud formats without vendor lock-in.

What is thin-edge.io?

thin-edge.io is an open-source framework specifically designed for resource-constrained edge devices. It acts as an intelligent intermediary between your on-premises hardware and the cloud.

The architecture for IoT scaling:
The framework logically separates between Main Device (Gateway) and Child Devices (Sensors/Actuators).

  • The gateway (your phyGATE): This is where all the intelligence resides. It manages the secure cloud connection, buffers data in case of internet outages, and can receive software updates.

  • The Child Devices: Here offers thin-edge.io Maximum flexibility:

    • Option A (Lightweight): Sensors only need to be able to communicate via MQTT – no installation is necessary.

    • Option B (Managed): On more powerful child devices (e.g., Linux-based controllers), a stripped-down version can be used. thin-edge.io Run version to enable software updates and monitoring even at the child level.

The advantage of thin-edge.io:
Unlike monolithic IoT agents, thin-edge.io modular and cloud-agnosticYou define the cloud (Azure, AWS, Thingsboard) via configuration in the gateway – the child devices don't need to know anything about it and remain completely independent of the cloud provider. This makes your field devices future-proof.

Our service: IoT integration without the headaches

With Ezpire, we have integrated thin-edge software into our ecosystem, offering you a ready-to-use IoT toolkit in combination with our gateways:

  • Ready-to-Run Gateway Image: For the phyGATE Tauri L We provide a finished image on which thin-edge.io It is configured as a gateway. MQTT broker, cloud mapper and device management are pre-installed.

  • Full Yocto integration: You can obtain  thin-edge.io seamlessly integrate into your own customer-specific image for various PHYTEC modules (e.g., BiMX 8M Mini).

  • Practical blueprints: Take advantage of our Demo applications as a starting point. We'll show you how to connect external sensors and visualize their data in the cloud.

  • Quick Start Guide: Our guides lead you simply and quickly from the initial connection to the dashboard setup, so you don't have to wade through generic wikis.

  • Technical advice: Our technical experts are available to advise and implement your own projects with ThinEdge and PHYTEC hardware.

Gateway vs. Child Device Architecture
The strength of thin-edge.io The advantage lies in the flexible connection of peripherals:

  • Main Device (Gateway): The Tauri-L runs the full stack (tedge-agent, tedge-mapper, mosquitto). It handles certificate management and protocol translation to the cloud.

  • Child Devices (Sensors): You don't need to install any thin-edge software. Simply send data to the gateway via MQTT. The gateway will then automatically map this data to virtual cloud devices.

  • Child Devices (Smart): For more complex child devices, it offers thin-edge.io a lightweight agent version that also enables software management and monitoring on the child device, but routes the cloud connection via the gateway.

Device Management Features
We utilize the modular architecture of thin-edge.io, in order to provide you with the following features:

  • Software Updates: Installation of Debian packages (apt) and Docker containers is natively supported and can be triggered from the cloud.

  • Configuration Management: Configuration files (e.g. tedge.toml or App-Configs) can be managed remotely via the Digital Twin in the cloud.

  • Log Files: Targeted retrieval of log files for error analysis without SSH access.

PHYTEC Exclusive: Open Source Stack with Thingsboard
Während thin-edge.io Since it comes standard with mappers for Azure, AWS and Cumulocity, we have closed the gap for open-source users:

  • Thingsboard Mapper: We have developed and pre-installed our own mapper.

  • The use case: This will allow you to achieve a Complete on-premise IoT solution No ongoing cloud costs. From the sensor to the gateway to the visualization on your own Thingsboard server – completely license-free and compliant with data protection regulations.

The ideal platform for your IoT gateway.

Our phyGATE®-Tauri Gateways They are ready to use immediately and offer an ideal foundation for your IoT projects. With the pre-installed Thin Edge.io Client allows you to easily connect additional IoT devices to the Tauri, which then acts as a gateway for communication with the cloud.

Thanks to its lightweight architecture, the thin-edge.io client Install flexibly on almost any system. If you don't need a gateway, the following is available: thin-edge.io Client also on our phyCORE®modules, such as the i.MX 8M Mini or the i.MX 6ULL, to disposal.
