The FPSC standard defines "must-have" signals to ensure as many compatible functions as possible over the long term. Since processor families are characterized by different capabilities, there are subclasses of the must-have signals that facilitate the selection of the right FPSC module for specific applications such as vision, HMI, or industrial networking.

Neben den Must-Have-Signals gibt es die Kategorie der Preferred Signals. Hier werden Signale auf Pins geführt, die derzeit von vielen Prozessoren unterstützt werden und auch für künftige System on Modules des FPSC-Feature-Sets berücksichtigt werden sollen.
