Faster to smart control:
Phytec presents modular IPC at the SPS
- New industrial PC / gateway with powerful ARM processor and NPU
- Enables smart controls with up to 50% lower production costs.
- CRA-compliant, open-source based & prepared for industrial applications

Mainz, November 19, 2025
At the SPS trade fair (November 25-27, Nuremberg Exhibition Centre), Phytec will present the phyCONTROL-Nova, a scalable industrial PC with a powerful ARM processor. It forms the basis for a modular concept that enables the rapid and cost-effective development of customized controllers and gateways. This saves customers time and money, allows them to maintain full control over their product, and ensures compliance with security and cyber resilience requirements. The phyCONTROL-Nova comes with a Yocto-based Linux operating system; a Debian distribution is also available. The embedded PC supports industrial protocols such as EtherCAT and applications like Node-RED, CODESYS, and 4DIAC.
The phyCONTROL-Nova can be used as an embedded controller for applications such as data mining and smart automation, or as an IoT gateway. This robust, fanless, and compact IPC features a powerful NXP i.MX 8M Plus quad-core processor, an NPU with a performance of up to 2,3 TOPS, up to 8 GB of RAM, and up to 64 GB of eMMC storage. It offers universal interfaces including 2x Gigabit Ethernet, 1x USB 2.0 / 1x USB 3.0, RS232/485, CAN, and 4x DI/DO. Expansions can be integrated via an M.2 connector (Key B), including a Hailo AI chip for AI applications directly on the edge device or Hilscher netX technology for supporting various real-time Ethernet and fieldbus systems.
Hardware and software can be individually customized.
A key feature of the IPC is its modular design: performance, interfaces, and functionality can be customized. Individual configurations offer cost advantages even for production runs as small as 500 units. The device is developed and manufactured by Phytec in Germany and includes the Yocto Linux operating system. The embedded PC is optimized for use with open-source software and also enables real-time applications. A Debian Trixie 13 distribution is available as an alternative operating system. For IoT integration, Node-RED, ThingsBoard, and thin-edge.io are supported, and a TPM 2.0 chip ensures advanced security functionalities. The embedded PC, housed in a robust metal enclosure with a DIN rail adapter, can be used in an extended operating temperature range of -40°C to +70°C.
Mario Haas, Head of Customer-Specific Projects at PHYTEC, says about phyCONTROL-Nova:
"The phyCONTROL-Nova can be used directly as a smart controller or gateway for numerous industrial applications. Its modular design allows for individual customization, making it an ideal alternative to classic PLC systems and DIN rail modules. Companies can thus save costs and retain full control over their product throughout its entire lifecycle. We also support them with current challenges such as compliance with the CRA (Cyber Resilience Act) and radio directives like RED (Radio Equipment Directive)."
