Mainz, January 29, 2026
Tiny module, big performance: Phytec presents the phyCORE-i.MX RT1170, the smallest pluggable System-on-Module (SoM) featuring NXP's i.MX RT1170 crossover MCU. Measuring just 30 x 30 mm, the module houses one Arm Cortex-M7 and one Arm Cortex-M4 core, standard industrial interfaces including camera and display connectivity, and Zephyr OS as a real-time operating system. Integrated security features such as Secure Boot, SBoM, and encryption enable the quick and easy development of CRA-compliant IoT devices and a wide range of industrial applications. The SoM and a development kit will be available starting at embedded world. On April 16, 2026, Phytec will host a free webinar on the use of Zephyr OS in industrial applications.
High computing power and industrial interfaces
With a powerful dual-core architecture suitable for multimedia applications, high energy efficiency and compact design, the phyCORE-i.MX RT1170 SoM combines the advantages of a classic MCU with the performance of an application processor.
The crossover MCU offers industrial interfaces such as 2x Ethernet, 3x CAN FD, and 2x USB 2.0 for reliable network and device connectivity. 6x I²C and 12x UART enable the connection of peripheral devices and flexible integration into complex systems.
MIPI DSI is available for connecting HMIs. Cameras for embedded vision applications can be integrated via MIPI CSI. The four SAI modules on the MCU are supported by an external audio codec. All processor functionalities and interfaces are accessible via a 200-pin connector on carrier boards.
Real-time and security features with Zephyr OS
The phyCORE-i.MX RT1170 System on Module supports Zephyr OS as its operating system. Phytec provides a customized version of this open-source operating system, which supports real-time applications and enables security features such as Secure Boot, SBoM, and encryption. Phytec will be offering a free webinar on April 16, 2026, to discuss the use of this operating system, specifically for industrial applications.
